Why in the World Would I Want a Laser?

Louis G. Chmura, DDS, MS

8:30 AM to 11:30 AM

CE Hourse: 3 Technical and/or Scientific

This presentation will be for orthodontists and staff who either have a laser in their office or are considering adding one.  We’ll explore many of the questions that come with adding this useful tool:

1.    Why do I want a laser-What can I do with it?

2.    If I were to buy a laser, how do I know which one to buy?

3.    How do I justify the cost?

4.    How do I stay out of trouble?

a.    Which procedures should I do?

b.    I haven’t used anesthetic for 20 years…

c.    What if something goes wrong?

d.    How do I train my staff when I'm not sure what I’m doing?

e.    Where do I go for additional training?

5.    How do I incorporate a laser when I’m already busy?

6.    What about my referrers-aren’t they going to be upset?

7.    How do I explain it to my patients and their moms so they become raving fans?

During this presentation, we’ll review some basic science, show before and after photos, and view videos of certain procedures.  We’ll discuss workflows to seamlessly incorporate a laser into your practice and review criteria for successful treatment planning. My goal is to make it valuable and entertaining to both new and experienced users.

Using Your Oral Hygiene Protocol to Promote Your Practice

(become the oral hygiene coach, rather than the oral hygiene police)

Louis G. Chmura, DDS, MS

1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

CE Hourse: 3 Marketing/Practice Management

How often have you talked with a patient about their poor oral hygiene and have the mom mention they just saw the dentist last week and they didn’t say anything (or worse-they were told “Johnny” is doing well”)?

How often have you gotten the feeling that the hygienists think you don’t address oral hygiene at all?

How often have you evaluated oral hygiene for a patient only to find someone else on your team gave them a very different grade last time?

If you have a rewards system (ie-wooden nickels, orthobucks…), do you have a clear idea of what constitutes an “A”?  A “B”?

Do you have a system for addressing the oral hygiene before it gets worse?

Do you have a system that lets patients and parents really understand how to evaluate where they are and make good choices?

Dr. Chmura will share the oral hygiene protocol he and his team have developed and explain how we came to a consensus on what each grade means.

He’ll show you his presentation to local hygienists and referring doctors and explain how this not only helped us in communicating a consistent message for the patients and parents, but helped them know all we are doing to take care of their patients.
